A new beginning for Milan–Bergamo Airport
Milan Bergamo Airport — also known as Orio al Serio — is undergoing a true transformation. On 25 November 2025, the new departures terminal was inaugurated following a €55-million upgrade by SACBO, aimed at adapting the airport to its growing passenger numbers and to new standards of comfort and safety.
With this enhancement, Milan–Bergamo is set to become not just an airport but — as its leadership describes — a real “aerotropolis”: an air hub integrated within an urban ecosystem of facilities, services, connections, and hospitality
Next-gen security checks — faster and stress-free
At the heart of the upgrade is the new security area: 7,500 square meters on the first floor with 14 lanes equipped with state-of-the-art CT scanners. These machines analyze carry-on luggage in 3D without requiring passengers to open their bags or remove laptops and other devices.
What this means in practice:
Liquids, gels, and aerosols are now allowed in containers up to 2 liters each
Laptops, tablets, and electronics can remain inside your bag
Security queues move much faster thanks to a smart system that directs passengers to the least crowded lanes
The result? More comfort, fewer hassles, and a smoother boarding experience — a huge step forward compared to the old rules (100 ml per container and mandatory transparent bag).
New facilities, more space, and greater efficiency
The renovation goes well beyond security. The new terminal now features:
30 new self check-in kiosks (for a total of 64), speeding up the registration process
An expanded extra-Schengen area with new boarding gates
An upgraded Baggage Handling System (BHS) for faster and more accurate sorting
The project — launched in March 2024 — is part of a broader €300-million plan designed to prepare the airport for the future.
What changes for travelers (and why it matters)
Whether you’re a frequent flyer or simply someone who values convenience, these updates genuinely change what it’s like to fly from Milan–Bergamo:
No more tiny bottles: shampoo, perfume, toiletries, and cosmetics can now be regular-sized, without restrictive limits
Smoother journeys: shorter queues, calmer security checks, and less stress over electronics or liquids
Ideal for quick trips: perfect for short breaks or last-minute travel — taking off from Bergamo and landing somewhere else in just a few hours
An airport ready for tomorrow: with its new infrastructure, Bergamo is positioning itself as not just a transit point but a modern, efficient, fully integrated hub
A few useful tips for a smooth departure
Even though the 2-liter rule applies, always double-check whether your specific flight uses lanes equipped with the updated scanners. Some airports still enforce the traditional 100 ml limit
If you’re traveling with kids or multiple devices, take advantage of the dedicated family or reduced-mobility lanes — usually faster and more convenient
Arrive early on peak travel days — even if checks are quicker, passenger flow can still be high.
